Adam Upright Piano For Sale with an Ornately Carved, Rococo Style Case

A Ludwig Adam upright piano with an ornately carved, rococo style, walnut case with gilt detail. Case covered in carvings of scrolling rocailles and coquilles typical of rococo ornament. Rococo art is based on the study of natural forms and is dominated by asymmetry and curved forms.
Ludwig Adam was a piano dealer, not a manufacturer, although he was probably part of the Adam family, manufacturers of quality pianos (Gerhard Adam in Aachen and one of his sons, Fritz (Friedrich) Adam, in Krefeld.
This piano, as the cast iron frame (with the FN logo) shows, was made by Fritz Neumeyer in Berlin, one of the biggest manufacturers in Germany at the time. He also exported a lot of uprights and grands to the UK. His company was founded in 1860 and folded in the autumn of 1905, upon the death of Mr. Neumeyer in August that year. This bankruptcy ended what was one of the most modern piano factories in Europe. His sons continued the production in other localities. They too had a considerable export to the UK, first under the name Gebr. Neumeyer (Neumeyer Bros.) and later once again under the family name only. Production lasted into the thirties.
In the summer of 1898 Mr. Neumeyer held a big outdoor celebration for all employees and their families. It was a big event lasting long into the night. The cause for the celebration was the production of the company’s 25,000th instrument. It was reported as being a highly ornate upright piano, in Renaissance style and made of Italian walnut. This instrument has the serial number 25,009 and probably refers to a batch of pianos made in a similar Renaissance style.
