A Lustrous, 1903 Pleyel Grand Piano For Sale with a Louis XV, Gold Case. Entire Cabinet is Covered with Vernis Martin and Oil Paintings of "Fete Galante" Scenes by Merlin of Courting Couples and Music-Making Figures in a Pastoral Background. Ornately Carved Giltwood Scroll Foot Legs and Lyre. A Stunning Example of a Rococo Style Piano.
Vernis Martin is a type of imitation Chinese lacquer named after the brothers Guillame, Etienne-Simon, Julien and Robert Martin. At the beginning of the 18th century pieces of Chinese lacquer work were popular and European cabinet makers attempted to find a process to copy this Eastern finish. In 1740 the brothers Martin received a royal patent for this process which involved adding bronze or gold powder to green varnish.
Ignaz Pleyel originally a publisher of music, began building pianos in 1807. Notoriously Pleyel pianos were played by Chopin.
