A Bechstein concert grand piano with a polished, black case. Cabinet features carved griffins on piano cheeks and carved turned legs. This Bechstein piano is the same model that Franz Liszt played. A rare model. See photos below.
C. Bechstein was established in 1853 in Berlin, Germany. During the Romantic period, orchestras more than doubled in size. Consequently pianos with a more powerful sound were required to play amongst all these instruments. Romantic music demanded greater dynamic expression from soft to loud, gentle to robust. Bechstein set out to build a piano that could show off the virtuosi of the time such as Franz Liszt. In 1857, Hans von Bulow (Liszt's son-in-law) gave the first public performance on a Bechstein grand piano by performing Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor in Berlin. |
