Barrel Pianos

Barrel pianos were at the height of their popularity from the mid 1800’s to the 1920’s. They were commonly seen outside on the streets worked by the ‘Organ Grinder’ and his monkey. This hand-turned, street piano was intended for use in the open air. It is a mechanically operated piano in where music is provided by a barrel or cylinder, most commonly in wood or sometimes metal. The surface of the barrel features metal protrusions that operate the hammer action of the instrument.
