European Unison |
As the country reeled in shock and frantically Googled ‘What will happen if we leave the EU?’ in late June 2016, Ruth Spencer Jolly, an emerging artist specialising in “musart”, set to work on ‘European Unison’: a musical response to the political upheaval of “Brexit”. |
‘European Unison’ is a musical illustration of Brexit, composed by the emerging artist Ruth Spencer Jolly. 28 pianists gather to represent the members of the European Union and play out the history of the EU. Each pianist will play a piece built around the national anthem of each of the 28 member states of the EU. The piece acts as a eulogy to the rich cultural exchange and peacekeeping cooperation we have turned our backs on. The ensemble of pianos demonstrates that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. |
